I think it is essential to identify the person's level, the reason why they are learning the subject, their learning styles and their interests in order to avoid getting confused later. I then suggest a 'learning plan' and discuss with the students how they would like to learn and what level they would like to achieve.
Whether you need help with French pronunciation, general conversation, vocabulary, or just a confidence boost or maybe a bit of everything, I would be happy to help!
